Mission

We are offering a full-time (100%) PhD Student at the Laboratory for the Chemistry of Materials and Manufacturing (ALCHEMY) at  EPFL Neuchatel. At EPFL ALCHEMY, we are focused on developing accessible chemistries and processing strategies that can enable the fabrication of a wide variety of advanced functional materials and devices.

A core area of research in ALCHEMY is the development of methods for converting 3D printed polymers into metals. We previously pioneered a technology called Hydrogel Infusion Additive Manufacturing (HIAM) that is capable of transforming polymers into composites, ceramics, and metals (Composites:https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matt.2026.102809,https://doi.org/10.1021/acsmaterialslett.5c00407;Ceramics/Metals: https://doi.org/10.1002/adma.202504951).

The goal of this PhD will be to expand the HIAM technology towards new classes of materials. Depending on the candidate, this could include non-oxide ceramics, metal-matrix composites, ceramic-matrix composites, polymer composites, or high entropy alloys. The PhD will span the development of chemistries and processes that result in high quality architected ceramic/metal parts, and the applications of these materials.
