The Institute for Slavic Languages and Literatures (ISSL) in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Bern invites applications for a 70% position as Lecturer in Slavic Linguistics (Ukrainian), beginning on August 1st, 2026, or at the earliest convenient date.
The successful candidate will represent Ukrainian linguistics in research and teaching and will be responsible for Ukrainian language instruction across the BA and MA programs in Slavic Studies. The position also includes teaching contributions to the interdisciplinary Eastern European Studies program. The teaching load amounts to 10 weekly lessons at the Lecturer level or 6 weekly lessons at the Assistant Lecturer level. The appointee will additionally coordinate the joint-degree programs in Slavic Studies and Eastern European Studies offered by the Universities of Bern and Fribourg and is expected to engage actively in collaboration with related disciplines as well as with the Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS). Participation in academic governance is also expected.
Depending on qualifications, the position will be filled at the level of Assistant Lecturer with tenure track or Lecturer. A completed PhD in Slavic Linguistics and native proficiency in Ukrainian are required.
For appointment at the Assistant Lecturer level, applicants must demonstrate teaching experience and present a postdoctoral research project; upon successful evaluation, the position may be converted into a tenured lectureship.
Appointment at the Lecturer level requires publications in an additional area of research beyond the PhD dissertation, several years of research and teaching experience, and a successful record in acquiring third-party funding.
Command of German for teaching and administration is expected or must be acquired within two years of taking up the position. Good knowledge of French, English, and additional relevant languages is desirable.
