The Opportunity

As a Process Modeller Drug Substance within Synthetic Molecules Process Development (PTDC), you will be a critical expert supporting Drug Substance (DS) project teams. Your primary focus will be leveraging chemical and process engineering principles, coupled with advanced modeling techniques, to successfully scale-up chemical processes from the laboratory to multi-purpose manufacturing equipment. You will be instrumental in defining robust scale-down conditions and ensuring essential engineering considerations are embedded in process design from the outset.

  • Drive Scale-Up/Scale-Down: Provide crucial process and chemical engineering input to support the successful scale-up, scale-down, and optimization of unit operations for both batch and continuous processes.

  • Embed Engineering in Design: Support early-stage process development by ensuring that key engineering and process considerations are meticulously built into the process design at the laboratory scale.

  • Expand Modeling Platform: Develop and expand our internal scale-up/scale-down models self-service platform, simplifying user interfaces for generalist applications across various unit operations. Grow relationships with Universities and external research consortia to help Roche stay at the forefront of Process Modeling.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work as a vital member of cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with process and plant chemists, engineering experts, and data scientists.

  • Regulatory Contribution: Apply your engineering expertise and process models to contribute to regulatory filings, including supporting the definition of design spaces and justification of scale-down models.

  • Technology Assessment: Actively follow and assess technological progress in the market and competitive field, identifying meaningful new technologies for implementation within our organization.

  • Optimization and Insight: Utilize your modeling techniques and data-based insights to drive business results, uncover hidden solutions in experimental datasets, and improve process outcomes.

  • Technical Mentorship: Act as a role model and catalyst for process modeling, utilizing your engineering and modeling expertise to proactively support and guide project teams.

Who you are:

You are an accomplished Chemical or Process Engineer with a deep understanding of reacting systems and a passion for applying advanced modeling and data science to pharmaceutical process development.

  • Advanced Education and Experience: You possess a higher education (at least Master's level) in Chemical or Process Engineering or a related field, coupled with a minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience.

  • Chemical Process Expertise: Demonstrated experience in designing and scaling chemical processes, including the application of physical organic chemistry and/or kinetic modeling to chemical engineering of reacting systems.

  • Modeling Tool Proficiency: Proven experience in the field of process engineering/modeling in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry, ideally with experience using tools such as gPROMS/gWAP or Dynochem. Experience in building models using Python or MATLAB or another coding language.

  • Process Knowledge: Strong knowledge of chemistry, chemical processes, and equipment, including expertise in process design and optimization, especially with multiphase systems, mixing, and distillations across various scales.

  • Data-Driven Approach: A strong drive to learn and master new technologies and modeling techniques, with a passion for process development and data science to improve business outcomes.

  • Conceptual Agility: Possesses strong conceptual thinking skills, comfortable diving into detailed project work while also abstracting learnings into robust general workflows.

  • CFD Experience (Plus): Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and relevant software such as COMSOL or M-Star is considered a plus.

  • Collaboration and Communication: Excellent teamwork and communication skills are essential for collaborating closely with the business; excellent command of written and spoken English is required (German is a plus).
